Why ladyloo?
Somewhere I had picked up the word lady as a stand in for actually knowing someone’s name. I had just spent some time in England. When the name popped into my head I didn’t think that it probably sounded so right because I was naming myself after an English bathroom. I’ve been ladyloo online since 2001.
I suppose I could claim I named myself after one of Emily Carr’s dogs. Would that be better?
What’s your real name?
Andrea Thompson. Nice to meet you.
Weren’t you an actress on Babylon5?
No. That is a different Andrea Thompson. Also, you are a nerd for knowing that.
Why did you start writing online?
Picture it. 2001. The Canadian prairies. A girl has been dumped by a boy she met on the Internet – that sparkly, new world where GeoCities, Compuserve and ICQ are going to change the world. What better place to vent her frustration?
Who is AB? What does AB stand for?
AB is my husband. It was originally an abbreviation for Alabama Boy. Although, it also happens to be his initials.
Why don’t you use people’s real name?
Other people can tell their own stories if they want to. It’s not my place to out them.
What are those animals at the top of the page?
The big one is a gopher, and the little one is a chipmunk. The chipmunk is just cute but the gopher is there because of a poem by Robert Kroetsch.
How do you grow a prairie town?
The gopher was the model.
Stand up straight:
telephone poles
grain elevators
church steeples.
Vanish, suddenly: the
gopher was the model.
What do you do for a living?
It’s not much of a living yet, but I write, produce marketing materials, and organize website implementation for people who don’t know anything about that and don’t really want to.
Where else to you live online?
I’m on:
